DTLA Sweet Tooth: Bella Frozen Yogurt

bella yogurt

Humans have long enjoyed yogurt dating back as far as 5000 BC. The 80s brought frozen yogurt to its peak adding fruits, chopped nuts and candy toppings to classic flavors Chocolate and French Vanilla. In the present day, frozen yogurt has become even more splendid.  Tarter than ice cream and with less fat, yogurt is a friendly dairy option for many with probiotics to aid in digestion.

Frozen Yogurt is just as popular as ice cream in Downtown and we have enjoyed at least one frozen yogurt shop in almost every district. Now the Historic Core can offer sugar-free, nonfat, gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free frozen yogurt, gelato, and soft serve ice cream options thanks to Bella Frozen Yogurt on 5th and Broadway.

When DTLA thinks of frozen yogurt, we think of sampling tasters, counting twirls to the top and controlling the destiny of our desired toppings.  When Bella thinks frozen yogurt, she thinks, “Mom, may I have some more?”

Bella Frozen Yogurt is named after the companies CEO, 2 year-old yogurt aficionado and daughter of Lina and Steve Myung, operators of Bella Frozen Yogurt. Bella is DTLA’s youngest yogurt promoter and according to young Bella, babies love it!

The festival season at Pershing Square, neighboring convenient stores and foot traffic from Metro Station provide a steady stream of pedestrians, many of whom discover they can now enjoy frozen yogurt cups, floats, coffee, and espresso along the way. For them, gummy bears, chocolate chips and the cool breeze of pastels are now a reality.

The store is a modest pink, dimly lit and cooled, consisting of frozen yogurt, ice cream, Gelato, espresso machine, a counter, toppings station, beverage frig, and a few matching tables that fill and empty with each wave of customers. Upon first glance, you could confuse Bella’s for a

young couple’s first startup, but they live downtown and own and operate two other franchises, a Quiznos in Culver City and a Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt in Santa Clarita.

Lina tells us when it comes to frozen yogurt every neighborhood has its own favorites.

Look out for an evolution of flavors as Bella Frozen Yogurt figures out what DTLA wants most.

The couple decided to open in DTLA a few months ago to expand their audience, saying they felt the neighborhood to be, “Young, urban and fun,” noting the hipster crowd and support from the millennial –  plus, Lina said, “Who doesn’t like froyo, it’s a guiltless pleasure.”

Bella’s Best Sellers

Bella Frozen Yogurt serves the famous Disney Dole Whip Yogurt Float that burst with the flavor of pineapple. Add fresh pineapple chunks and pineapple juice for triple the tang.

Yogurt is not the only frozen cup Bella has to offer. Bella’s Vanilla Custard attaches itself to your mouth and doesn’t let go. And when it does
 it’s gone too soon
Add Captain Crunch and it’s an adventure on the high seas for your taste buds. Hazelnut Gelato is also an alternative favorite, topped with coconuts and whip cream, but it’s really about building your own and every combination works.

Flavors are constantly changing but all scoop effortlessly from your cup with Bella’s assortment of color-changing spoons and they never run out of those little white taster cups or yogurt for you to try before you buy.

Is that sugar? Not in the NSA Strawberry topped with Kiwi. And there’s no gluten in the Original Tart, just tart. Bella also makes a chill Cold Brew Float and has a full Espresso Bar featuring the World’s  Best, Klatch Coffee. Winner of the World Barista Competition against forty-two countries, you will understand the cult following for its delicious Cold Brew and smooth Espresso.

As sweet as Bella Frozen Yogurt may seem, it does come with some edge. It’s located just west of 5th and Broadway, a corner DTLA has been struggling to “bring back”.  Bella Frozen Yogurt has joined in the fight and pioneering the effort with frozen yogurt being the flag bearer.

What? Don’t you think frozen yogurt can be tough? Try Bella Frozen Yogurt’s Death by Chocolate with added mini chocolate chips or broken Butter Finger pieces. If that doesn’t convince you, another fan favorite, the Sea Salt Caramel with almonds will come to your rescue every time. Visit Bella Frozen Yogurt and try the new flavor of the week!
