ASTRO DOUGHNUTS AND FRIED CHICKEN: Comfort Food That’s Out of This World

A plump and juicy piece of fried chicken, thick cut onion rings, jalapeño slaw and sriracha mayo sandwiched between a savory sliced doughnut.  These words alone invoke almost tangible visualizations of the most sinfully decadent food offerings at the county fair.  Only this is way better and you don’t have to haul over to the Pomona Fairgrounds and it’s available all year.  You only need to get yourself to W. 6th St for the most crave-worthy comfort food to ever hit DTLA.  What began as a food truck in Washington DC with dessert-like donuts that nearly caused riots, has landed in the middle of DTLA to satisfy a hankering for award-winning confections people didn’t know they had.

Childhood friends Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern shared two loves; hockey and American comfort food.  The best part of a game or practice session was meeting for donuts after leaving the ice. The food love-fest continued into adulthood and they forged ahead with their gastronomic vision and opened their first eatery that presented modern interpretations of their favorite foods – donuts and fried chicken. Creative and experimental recipes breathed new life into these traditional favorites and the demand got bigger and crowds came from far and wide.  Soon they were the talk of the town and Astro made it on regional DC and national “Best of” lists.  Next thing you know, they’ve partnered with Arthur Levitt lll, former president of Hard Rock CafĂ©, Disney Regional Entertainment and Fandango just to name a few, and Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has a second home in Los Angeles amidst a swarm of pre-opening buzz.

Astro’s urban industrial interior is a direct juxtaposition to the wildly flavorful comfort fare on the menu.  The Vanilla Glaze, Maple Bacon Crème Brûlée, and PB&J are all there in addition to seasonal offerings like Nutella Hot Cake, Halva, and Chocolate Banana Daiquiri.  Savory is equally represented with a plethora of sauces and add-ons to top or dip your fried chicken.  Kimchi slaw and sriracha buffalo if you crave fire or BBQ and honey mustard if sweet and tart is your style.  Wash it all down with sugar cane soda or Nitro cold brew coffee.  And now that Astro is open for Sunday brunch, you can get your fried chicken fix with eggs, cheese, and bacon or French toast made from, you guessed it, a doughnut.  And because nothing spells game day like doughnuts and fried chicken, Astro Party Packs are filled with copious amounts of wings, doughnuts, tater tots and kimchi slaw.  Delivery is available to folks from downtown to Silverlake and catering is available to anyone who wants it.
