The Crafty Pedal: A Woke Bike Shop

The Crafty Pedal is, quite possibly, the only late night cycling and craft boutique you will love with every visit. It’s a nexus for cycling, art, fashion, crafts and social responsibility.

This unique bike shop is the love labor of local muralist, music producer and cycling devotee Ané Uno.

Ane`is the driving force behind The Crafty Pedal

“I’m all about balance”

He’s a soft spoken man who smiles easily behind horn rimmed glasses and an unruly stock of thick black hair. A Libra tattoo peeks out from inside his right wrist. When talking about The Crafty Pedal his eyes shine with optimism. A native of South Central, Ane` lives and works in Downtown LA. When asked about his origins he explains, “Ané is short for ‘Art Never Ends’. I’m born and raised in DTLA. I’ve been living in Downtown warehouses for 17 years, and so I’ve seen a lot of progress.”

High end bike, low end price

One key service The Crafty Pedal provides is “Build Your Own Bike”. A customer designs and builds a completely custom bicycle fitted to their taste, usage needs, budget and even body type. Experts are on hand to assist in the build. The idea is make the rider so comfortable they once they are on the bike they will want to stay on.

Ané stocks a wide range of rescued and refurbished bicycle parts, some very high end, along with hand crafted upgrades that make it possible to build a fully custom $1000  bespoke bicycle for a fraction of that price. Bicycles built at the Crafty Pedal come with a year of free tune-ups as well as coaching on DIY bicycle troubleshooting, tuning and maintenance.

“Pimp” your ride.

And for that bike that’s been sitting unused, The Crafty Pedal is equipped and eager to bring it back to life with all the necessary parts, accessories and tools close at hand, and a team of experts, on site and off, who love a challenge.  Damaged bikes are easily repaired.

Are you looking to “pimp” your human powered ride? The Crafty Pedal offers a selection of hand crafted wood and leather accents created from reclaimed and repurposed materials, to turn your bike into a symbol of sustainability that will stand out from the crowd.

Taking Care. Giving Back.

Keeping people on their bikes does a great service for the Earth, and the Crafty Pedal does not stop there. This community bike shop devotes a portion of its profits to providing food and necessities for the homeless. Ané calls the effort, “The Care Package”.

“I try to give back as much as I can”, says Ané Uno`. “The Care Package helps me to give back to the community and help our homeless neighbors”.

“Be positive. Life is an open canvas.”

And if that isn’t enough. The Crafty Pedal also provides art space where local artists show their work free of charge. According to Ané,

“I believe there’s two kinds of artists, the happy artist and the sad artist. I’ve noticed, from experience, that the sad artist is often the one with a pocketful of money but not as much creative freedom. The happy artist may not have much money, but he’s making the art he wants.”

When asked about the basic philosophy behind The Crafty Pedal, Ane` grinned and said, “Be positive. Life is an open canvas!”
