If you’re looking for fresh and top-quality produce during our current state of living, then City Hall Farmers Market is the place to go—or specifically, pick up and go drive through.
City Hall Farmers Market has been serving the Civic Center area since 2008; due to the Stay At Home order from Mayor Eric Garcetti, the market had no other option to close down on March 12, 2020.
With this closure, City Hall Farmers Market felt as if they went dark due to the majority of their customers now staying at home instead of working at Civic Center.
Susan Hutchinson, who is the manager of City Hall Farmers Market, and her team, have innovated the modern Farmers Market. Inspired by Altadena’s Farmers Market, Hutchinson created a model for the Civic Center area in which consumers can purchase the produce online, days prior to the market, and pick it up on a Thursday morning, all in the comfort of their car to ensure full obedience with the City’s guidelines.
Hutchinson’s innovative model is an online website which will act as a virtual market, in which producers, who happen to be small farms, and consumers can both participate and interact with. Not only will this allow consumers to purchase produce during this hard season, but it will also help the producers financially.
To ensure that the model will be fully effective, producers drop off the produce early Thursday morning; then, Hutchinson and her team get to work by placing the orders in their corresponding boxes.
Customers will then simply drive through the designated area, which is a very safe location for both workers and customers to maintain little contact as possible.
A huge support and sponsor of City Hall Farmers Market is Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association—which they have been spreading the word out and finding support in the Arts District Community.
City Hall Farmers Market hopes when things go back to normal, the Drive Thru model could still be an option for those who prefer that method.
City Hall Farmers Market drive-thru model located on the patio of City Hall East not only complies with the city guidelines, but also is inspiring for various organizations seeking to overcome this season.
