Omni Hotel Host 5th Annual Families in Schools 2017 Alliance Summit & Parent Engagement Awards

This year’s 5th Annual Families in Schools Alliance Summit 2017 theme is “Education Without Borders” which speaks to the current political climate and actions needed to continue to promote the importance of academic success.

Families In Schools, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to involve parents and communities in their children’s education to achieve lifelong success, announced that approximately 400 education advocates, partners, educators, and parents will gather on Thursday, November 2 at the Alliance 2017 Summit & Parent Engagement Awards. Presented by Families In Schools, Alliance 2017 will feature University of California President Janet Napolitano as a keynote speaker, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis as an ambassador guest speaker. ABC7’s Weekend Meteorologist Kimi Evans will serve as the conference emcee.

“For the past four years, we’ve held the Alliance Summit to bring together parents, educators, and community leaders to discuss the most pressing issues impacting student achievement,” said Oscar Cruz, President, and CEO of Families In Schools. “The theme Education Without Borders became clear long before President Trump’s rescinding of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), yet it speaks directly to the political climate we are facing in our nation today.”

The event is expected to bring out a diverse range of participants from elected officials to educators, philanthropists, nonprofit partners, and parents—all with a common goal to build partnerships for student success. The Agenda calls for an opening ceremony led by Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, First District offering special remarks followed by a Keynote and Awards Lunch led by President of the University of California, Janet Napolitano honoring Parent Leaders and Advocates with the Gayle Miller Corporate Award be presented to The Boeing Company and the Community Champion Award presented to the California Community Foundation

“What makes the Alliance Summit a powerful event for attendees is it puts policymakers, advocates, educators, and parents in one room, working and learning together towards the common goal of promoting academic success for the students we serve,” said Cruz. “We are honored to have University of California President Janet Napolitano and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis—two strong advocates for the power of education—join in the discussion of creating equitable partnerships that benefit families here in Los Angeles and across the state.”

Alliance 2017 will host more than 15 breakout sessions on pressing issues ranging from immigrant resources, parent engagement, college and career readiness, defending DACA and special needs advocacy.
