It’s Halloween all over again, starring famous DTLA Hotels and their victims.
This time, believe it or not? it’s not the Cecil, temporary home of the Night Stalker, along with an Australian serial killer, falling newborn, a list of over 10 suicides or an innocent nonswimming virgin. But like the Cecil, the hotel does have a reputation for a few death jumps. Yet, unlike, the Cecil or other notorious DTLA limited stay options most of which border Skid Row, like the Barkley or the Hotel Alexandria, with so many ghost sightings you’d think the places were haunted, our new death barista is located in a swankier part of town, in the Financial District, to be exact – in the form of our very own, Standard Hotel on Flower.
We sure hate to compare the two, but the Standard has had 3 deaths in 3 years.
But let’s take a closer look at the question…Is the Standard Hotel the New Cecil?
When Andre Balazs opened the Standard in 2002 he took up the former headquarters of Superior Oil (now a part of EXXON Mobile), and turned the inner shell into a hotel boutique with 207 rooms, 24-hour restaurant, full-service Ping-Pong club, a rooftop bar complete with swimming pool and waterbed gazebos, stunning panoramic views, summer disco bikini parties and drinks, apparently strong drinks. Let’s just say the Standard is one of Downtown’s favorite spots, and rightfully so not considering the growing list of people who have opened the doors to the Standard and found the exit led to their deaths. Dying to party? Maybe, but let’s not pass the death torch to the Standard just yet.
The Cecil was the last place Elizabeth Short, more infamously known as ‘The Black Dahlia’, was seen before her body was found bisected and dumped in an empty lot in 1947. And that’s one of it’s less gory tales considering she didn’t end up in the hotel’s water supply.
But The Standard, is it a murderous escape room?
Remember that murder shortly after 2:30am on Dec 13th, 2015? When glass shattering gunfire erupted by the entrance, and four people were struck, and one person was pronounced dead? Yes, that was a tragedy for the Standard. But the Cecil, on June 4, 1964, housed the murder of the Pidgeon Woman Goldie Osgood, who was found dead in her ransacked room, stabbed, strangled and sexually assaulted.
but…In Sept of 2014, a man jumped from the roof of the Standard falling 12 floors to his death.
And yesterday, sadly, a woman lept to her death in an apparent suicide at 1:15 am possibly taking the meaning of “Last Call for Alcohol” to a whole new level. Ground Level.
