With a city so large Los Angeles cannot be defined by a single style of art, music, dance, or food. For its second-year, Frieze will be celebrating Los Angeles, the land of diversity, creativity, and cultural communities as dynamic as the city itself.

Set to open in on February 14th, Frieze Los Angeles, the new contemporary art fair, offers an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in art by 70 of the most momentous and forward-thinking galleries from the city and around the world.

It will be a weekend where an extraordinary audience from all over LA gather in the beautiful iconic backlot of Paramount Pictures and walk alongside a curated program of over 16+ projects from art installations and films to artistic performances and live music. There will also be food to enjoy from LA’s top restaurants.

With an invitation – only preview on February 13 and general viewing from February 14-16, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Co – Curators Rita Gonzales and Pilar Tompkina Rivas

Co-curated by Rita Gonzales and Pilar Tompkina Rivas and supported by global lead partner Deutsche Bank, the second edition of Frieze is said to be a globalized selection of artists, while remaining in tune to Los Angeles’ relationship to the Americas. Los Angeles, a breathing ground for art and film, has a plethora of minority communities that have helped shaped the city’s cultural identity but whom are often misrepresented. Frieze seeks to give shape, form, and voice to communities of color and women.

Freize celebrates LA’s dynamic culture and what LA has contributed to the visual arts, defining Los Angeles’ position as a global arts center and destination. Over three days, Frieze features Los Angeles’ galleries which are young as well as the city’s more established galleries. Other galleries from around the US and world will also be in attendance. Anyone attending this year’s Frieze will join in on extraordinary conversations in an authentically curated, shared setting together.

What to expect:

In response to a New York City film set built in Hollywood, Freize Projects 2020 features installations, performances, sculptures, and videos exploring themes of representation, identity, and myth.

Performances by Patrisse Cullors, a native to Los Angeles, uses dance as a healing act to reclaim time, space, and emotional energy. A two-channel video installation from Lorna Simpson in collaboration with a group of African American ballet dancers addresses issues of gender, identity, memory, and representation.

A video instillation by Mario Torres weaves together seemingly unrelated works of art between events, music, and pop culture. His video titled ‘Falling Together in Time,’ pieces together an incident from 1981, in which Mohammad Ali talks a suicidal jumper off the ledge of a building in Los Angeles Miracle Mile, with 1983 hit ‘Jump’ by Van Halen. ‘Jump,’ leads to the band’s overall breakup due to artistic differences that arise because of the song’s synth-heavy style.

A video by Jonathas de Andrade titled, ‘Voyeuristico,” takes an intimate look into people’s wallets and their contents, providing an insight into people living in Brazil and South America across gender, race and class. While Tania Candiani, a Mexican artist, uses a performative installation to exploring themes of technology and labor, focusing on the history of California during WWll, drawing a correlation between forced work of Japanese-American women in

More artists presenting new work include: Will Boone, Channing Hansen, Gary Simmons, Gabriella Sanchez, Vincent Ramos, Tavares Strachan, and Mungo Thomson. Other featured artists will include: Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Barbara Kasten, and Naama Tsabar.

Beyond the world of art, film, and videos a culinary experience will also be provided from some of LA’s hottest restaurants, from Roberta’s Pizza in Culver City to Sqirl in East Hollywood, and Cha Cha Matcha.
