In the new millennium, wigs are no longer taboo especially with our favorite celebrities rocking custom wigs on a daily. In fact wigs have become so acceptable and so discreet, you would never guess your favorite looks came with a sew in or added pieces to natural hair…

Insert Jazmayne Chatman here.

Jazmayne, 32, is the creator and owner of the “Glam Squad LA” in Downtown Los Angeles. The “Glam Squad LA” specializes in custom wigs and weaves that are so chic, discreet and out of this world, you would be willing to give Glam Squad LA your entire life savings.

Jazmayne found inspiration in her grandmother who is an avid wig wearer. She wanted to create looks that created a moment. She then took all her old weaves, turned them into “units” to transform herself into someone different every day.

Jazmayne got her start at an early age working under her mother, celebrity hairstylist Tonya Cryer. “My mom taught me how to do hair. We used to have our own salon together in North Hollywood. I took over her family business and was the manager for 5 years of the 10.”

After taking over the family business in North Hollywood, Jazmayne reinvented the salon and renamed it “Glam Squad LA” and ultimately relocated to Downtown LA.

“Even though I do work in entertainment, what’s most important to me and why I wanted to move down here (Downtown) is to connect with more real people,” Chatman said.

With many fashion brands moving to Los Angeles, more specifically Downtown, there is a demand for places like Glam Squad’s “Glam Boutique.”

Oddly enough, “Glam Boutique” is modeled after a fashion house showroom. The units on display are sample sizes. You can see what your options are and try on the units, then get a custom look created to fit you.

Catering to the condition that fits your lifestyle.

When you come in it’s like a hair fashion show. They pick three to four options that fit your lifestyle. They also have a private room for women who don’t want to be exposed in the open. The “Squad” has seen an increase of clients suffering from Cancer and Alopecia. If you are suffering from cancer or alopecia they help you figure out the best option for you. The collection is broken down to The Executive, The Diva and The Fly Girl.”

“If you want to go to Afropunk and you know can’t wear that look to your corporate job, The Executive is for the 9-5 woman. Chic and fabulous. The Diva is a full unit, think Diana Ross meets Beyonce. The Fly Girl is the “Love and Hip Hop” esqe girl. She’s bold and colorful.

All of the wigs are Premium Indian Hair. You can also provide your own hair but the Premium Indian Hair is recommended.

Your hair is an investment. Remember, these wigs are built to last and depending on how often you will wear your unit, you may want to invest a little more. Why invest the time, money and energy for something not to last, especially if you are rocking your wig on a daily?!

So what’s next for Jazmayne and the Glam Squad?

“I definitely see myself going on tour. I want to teach my technique to other stylists. Though my mom is in the industry, I’m really inspired by Kim Kimble and her Squad. I love her tempo. They are strong and though she’s the leader every person comes in collectively creating something for production. Having a great team is the key. I couldn’t do these “Motorsport” 8-foot braids by myself.

“There’s a team of us. No matter the deadline we get it done.”

“I eventually want to do Tim Burton and Marvel type things. I want us to be known for creating pieces that are Oscar worthy. The people I look up to are not big on social media, they are Emmy award-winning and/or Oscar-nominated. That’s what I really want for myself. I want to leave a mark with my colleagues. That’s when I can die.”
