“What better way to get a triple dose of American culture than to spend the day museum hopping in Downtown Los Angeles?”
Hello DTLA! My name is Kiran Rai. I’m a 27 year-old British actor and television announcer traveling here in the USA. I’ll be heading to India soon to finish the filming of my first Bollywood film, “Marriage Online”, but not before leaving my mark on Hollywood and experiencing arts and culture in the City of Angels.
Lucky for me, SoCal Museums announced its 15th Annual Museums Free-for-All on Saturday, January 25th, just one day after I touched down at LAX.
On Free-for All Day, Angelinos have their pick of over 40 museums to chose from, all presenting art, cultural heritage, natural history, and science.
For almost 10 years hosting countless events across the world and being featured in over 1000 newspapers and magazines I had never experienced such a sensation as when visiting The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
On exhibit, was Seven Stations, Selections from MOCA’s Collection even Stations organized by Mia Locks, Senior Curator and Head of New Initiatives, and Bennett Simpson, Senior Curator and Administrative Department Head, with Karlyn Olvido, Curatorial Assistant, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
Seven Stations charts a route through the museum’s permanent collection with works from the 1950s until today.
It was truly a fascinating, history lesson of what it’s like to be an American through the eyes of such talented artists. Great styles and great colours the gallery was smooch.
Each labyrinth comprised of present dialogues between artists, artworks, and themes from mid-20th-century depictions of America and a gallery of MOCA’s beloved Mark Rothko paintings.
Other a artists in the exhibition include: Terry Adkins, Ruth Asawa, Judith Bernstein, Dara Birnbaum, Lee Bontecou, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Robert Frank, Samara Golden, Dan Graham, Naotaka Hiro, Joan Jonas, Yayoi Kusama, Liz Larner, Linda Montano, Bruce Nauman, Louise Nevelson, Nam June Paik, Beverly Pepper, Robert Rauschenberg, Martha Rosler, Mark Rothko, Nancy Rubins, Betye Saar, Richard Serra, Alina Szapocznikow, Atsuko Tanaka, KaariUpson, Nari Ward, and Mason Williams.
My overall favourite discovery at MOCA was learning a $10 million donation is allowing (MOCA) in Los Angeles to make art accessible to everyone. Beginning Saturday, they will offer free general admission going forward, only charging for special exhibitions.
