Expresso Self: GroundFloor Cafe

By Thelma Alfaro

Corporate coffee shops–fast  and predictable keep a constant supply of customers coming. But what is coffee if not the perfect blend of individuality, bold taste and the instant vivity it affords the drinker?

The Gallery Row Art Walk News would like to showcase one of the Row’s most pleasant French-American Cafes as part of this month’s Expresso Self Cafe Critique.

In the heart of Gallery Row, the Groundfloor Cafe has been deliberately offering their unique blend of taste, quality and care with every single cup.

Between the buttery goodness of their pastries, and their fresh vegan snack choices, it is as if they brought all that is good from Europe to their store and made it fit LA’s look and feel.

Witness the creation of an iced mocha latte, a summer drink that was recommended served half steamed, half cold to create the smooth foamy texture of the milk as it collides with the ice.

The espresso shot is quickly mixed with mocha and milk, before it had the chance to expire and create the bad taste and bitterness that some espresso drinks tend to have if not taken the proper steps to prevent it.

Unlike the burnt water-down coffee drinks served in other establishments, there is no need to add more, or ask for less sugar, mocha, or milk, seeing as the ratio and consistency is spot on.

What better way to top off a delicious cup of coffee than with crepes, croissants and gelato alongside your drink? With exceptional customer service Samy Bazine, the owner of Groundfloor Café on Spring Street, has proven you dont have to try too hard to replicate the French.

Groundfloor Cafe is the perfect spot to be as a tourist as well for any individual who has lived in LA all their life and is tired of the same old, mechanically made, predictable cup of coffee.

Instead of rustic red white and blue flags plastered on every wall and French baguettes on the counter tops, the Groundfloor Café has modern aesthetics and a cool, casual ambiance.

French hip-hop–among other genres–played quietly overhead, while two very polite and friendly barista’s ready to take my order.

The Groundfloor Café has stayed true to its French roots to provide customers who step into their cafe a delicious cup of coffee; greeting and sending the customer away truly satisfied.
