Rams Knock Out Saints and Drew Brees in NFC Title Rematch

The Los Angeles Rams were clearly bothered and irritated by the New Orleans Saints whining and grumbling over last year’s controversial NFC Championship victory heading into Sunday’s rematch at the Coliseum. The Rams crushed the Saints, 27-9 in their 2019 home opener while knocking Saints legendary Quarterback Drew Brees out of the game in the process…

Early on, Rams’ Defensive Tackle and two-time reigning Defensive MVP Aaron Donald blew past the line to break up a pass, his giant hand colliding with Saints Quarterback Drew Brees. The twelve-time All-Pro QB left the game with broken ligaments in his right thumb, the injury will require surgery and keep him off the field for six weeks.

Saints backup Teddy Bridgewater was overwhelmed by the Rams tenacious defense. The Rams did not allow a touchdown in the rematch. ” It really didn’t change anything at all for us,” Rams pass rusher Dante Fowler said. “We were doing a good job before he got hurt. Everybody was on top of their game.”

Rarely has a week two matchup had this amount of intensity and fervor leading up to the Rams home opener. However, the Rams have felt slighted in the aftermath of the controversial NFC Championship, 26-23, Overtime victory over the Saints.

Last year’s NFC Title in the Superdome in New Orleans featured the infamous uncalled pass interference late in the 4th quarter by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman.

The alleged no call was such an offense to the game, the NFL actually changed the rules, so pass interference is reviewable solely based on one play. Although the league is giving this flimsy rule a one year audition, it seems that this rule is yet another slant in favor of the offense, also opening up an ugly can of worms where every play is under the microscope.

The refs standing on the sideline, squinting at a Microsoft Surface tablet for several excruciating minutes seems excessive, while what the refs are reviewing is completely arbitrary,. Demolishing momentum, excitement and the ebb and flow for the teams. I love football, but I don’t want to spend five hours at the scorching Coliseum, do you?

Human error is what makes sports beautiful and tragic at the same time. Let’s not forget: The Saints withered away an early 13-0 lead, in OT the Saints won the coin toss and promptly went three and out. At some point, Who Dat’ needs to look in the mirror, and move on.

While Los Angeles offense was sluggish during the first half, these Rams caught fire in the second half.

Rams QB Jared Goff threw for 283 yards, a touchdown pass and a TD run in the impressive victory. Running Back Todd Gurley added 63 yards on the ground along with a TD. The win was a slice of vindication- the Saints convinced the league to review pass interference calls (Horrible Decision), and still the Rams we’re victorious.

“Every win is a big win, but today was a very important win,” Robey-Coleman said. “It was a win that basically just closed all the chatter and the naysaying.” It was Robey-Coleman who committed the infamous no call during last year’s controversial NFC Championship Overtime,26-23 victory.

The Rams improve to 2-0 in the surprisingly competitive NFC West division. The San Francisco 49ers, as well as the Seattle Seahawks, are also 2-0. The Rams will travel to Cleveland to face Baker Mayfield and the new-look Cleveland Browns on Sunday night Football, airing on NBC. Somewhere in the Big Easy, a die-hard Saints fan is surely crying over the outcome.
