Variety – The Children’s Charity of SoCal Host 9th Annual Charity Poker & Casino Night

It’s been almost three years since Variety – The Children’s Charity of SoCal celebrated their 75th Anniversary at LA LIVE. That day, 75 local children, most suffering from cerebral palsy, received customized bikes that enabled them to pedal with their arms. Watching these children experience the thrill of riding their very own bikes, donated by the charity, brought DTLA waves of heartfelt emotions only a few could describe…

Bill Pickett

“It’s hard to describe the feeling of watching a child with special needs ride a bike for the very first time. Many of these kids cannot walk on their own, so when they ride a bike, their disabilities seem to fade away,” said Michael Alvarez, President of the Board of Directors, Variety of Southern California.

Variety’s Optimal Strategy

Long considered “The Heart of Show Business,” Variety found its roots in the entertainment industry when on Christmas Eve in 1928; a baby girl was found abandoned on the seat of a movie theatre in Pittsburgh.

The “Variety Club,” a newly formed social organization founded by 11 men affiliated with the entertainment industry, agreed to financially underwrite the child’s support and education. Since that time, Variety has grown to an international charity with 44 chapters in 12 countries, raising more than $2 billion for children in need.
