DTLA MakeOver: Hellens Sample Shop

Hellen’s  Sample Shop has truly become the jewel of the LA Fashion District. The 5,000 sq ft space nestled on the corner of Pico Blvd and Stanford Ave, brings a chic and high-end look and feel to a usually overlooked segment of the Wholesale area in the Fashion District, making it a true shopping destination and coveted experience for those in the know…

With 24ft high walls house shimmering cement floors, large oversized tropical print walls, immaculately dressed mannequins, a sitting nook surrounded by trees, glimmering hot pink neon lights and a curated play list that will make you Shazam… the store is as much an Instagram-able moment as it is an amazing fashion find.

Creative Director, Nicodemus Bernard, designed the store and created the brand identity, saying he wanted, “To bring a fresh, trendy, industrial meets Cali-chic glam experience to the guest… when you walk through the doors you will be immediately transported.”

The brainchild and CEO, Hellen Lee, conceptualized Hellen’s Sample Shop as the first of its kind Sample House, a Sample Sale that never ends. Each season Brands and Designers create samples for their up-coming collections to present to buyers.

When that buy is done usually those samples will end up in boxes shipped to warehouses or to Sample Sales that will run once a month and are usually super exclusive and an extreme hassle.

Prices range from $5 and up depending on the brand and style.

They are able to do this because they receive samples daily from design houses, only accept cash, do not accept returns or exchanges and there are no fitting rooms. It’s totally understandable as these samples are limited and the prices are so unbelievable. Designers and Brands range from DVF, Hale Bob, Johnny Was and Elizabeth and James to Favlux, MLV and On the Land to name a few… there is literally something for everyone, every size, every taste and every occasion.

The store has become something of an institution on social media with #hellensgirls, guests, Miss USA gals (they are a sponsor for) and influencers posting finds, videos and pictures of their visit. You can even get cute collectible souvenir t-shirts.

Going beyond fashion, #hellensgirls are involved with community activism by promoting initiatives such as Clothing Drops, the Night Mission and Giving Keys, Organizations that help to benefit and aid the homeless population in Downtown LA.

If you have not been, it’s strongly advised that you go. You will not be disappointed, remember to bring some cash, your phone and some friends.  810 E. Pico Blvd #134, LA, CA 90021 – Corner of Pico Blvd and Stanford Ave.
