Los Angeles–California State Controller, Betty Yee, has been whisked into hiding since she accidentally paid teachers what they’re worth last month. When the mistake was exposed on Twitter, backlash was universal and immediate.
Says one finance executive who self-describes spending his time sending “value-added” emails and attending “strategic meetings,” “what Ms. Yee has done is completely outrageous and wasteful. She doesn’t deserve to spend my hard earned tax dollars.”
Says an executive from Apple, “California has an incredible budget deficit and we can’t afford these shenanigans that Ms. Yee has quote, “mistakenly” pulled.”
When a young reporter asked the Apple executive if Apple paying zero dollars in taxes and sitting on $230 billion of cash was helping to contribute to the deficit, the executive responded “don’t attack me personally.” The executive then stormed off, claiming he had to fly to Davos to attend a meeting on income inequality.
But Ms. Yee did have at least one supporter.
Sensing an opportunity to exploit the situation for his upcoming 2018 gubernatorial bid, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued a tweet defending the embattled controller. However, the tweet was immediately deleted after billionaire political donor Eli Broad tweeted to the Mayor “take it down.”
Current LA Mayor Eric Garcetti was also asked where he stands on the controversial move made by Ms. Yee, but the mayor uncharacteristically declined to state a position.
Ms. Yee has been missing for the last 3 weeks.
