Ice Cream Shop Pioneers Vegan Movement in DTLA

For many, converting from carnivore to Vegan may seem like an impossible task. For others, it may be a social statement, rite of passage, fight for animal justice or even a health necessity.

Whatever backs your level of faith, there is finally a vegan ice cream in Downtown that truly captures the rich, creamy goodness of the popular frozen treat without all the things you can’t or just won’t have. It can be found at Divine Dips and it’s leading the way within the DTLA Vegan movement for vegans and non-vegans alike.

Count your blessings with every scoop.

Divine Dips offers dairy-free, gluten free, mouthwatering vegan ice cream from the cone to the cherry on top, including the melted chocolate, chopped nuts and even the whipped cream.

Take a Dip!

While the entire shop, which does double duty as an artisan ice cream factory, is vegan, Divine Dips has gone the extra mile by also creating gluten-free cookies, brownies, toppings, and sauces which allow for some truly delectable options such as ice cream sandwiches, Sundaes, and Vegan “Mylkshakes” to choose from.

Aside from spins on classic flavors, Divine Dips has created notable additions such as: Bombay Gold, a spicy mix of turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom and ginger bits, and Pink Dragon, a soft yet tart strawberry and dragon fruit blend. In total, they offer twenty-four flavors, a number of which are rotated frequently in their glass display, that many will testify are better than dairy based ice cream both health and taste wise.

True Believers

Two types of customers frequent the year-old ice cream shop that opens from 2pm to 9pm and stays open late to 11pm on the weekends.

The Believer and the non Believer, with the latter, easily converted after one taste.

We Have Seen the Glory

There’s nothing like witnessing someone change their entire belief system about being vegan after removing a tiny silver taster spoon from between the lips.

Eyes light up. Smiles are made and hope visibly shines through as if though they have just been delivered from a terrible plight. Forever set on a path to righteousness, it’s now up to their own free will, but rest assured the body knows best and visibly shows signs of approval.

But what type of miracle is this?

In the beginning, Diane Jacobs created The Cakeworks, a highly successful custom cake gallery that created edible art cakes on the west side. Her artistic cakes gained national attention but were meant to satisfy the nation’s sweet tooth more than anything else.

It wasn’t until Jacobs had to address her own changing dietary needs, she began scouring the market trying to find delicious and flavorful alternatives to add to her desserts. At that time there weren’t many viable options so she decided to take the measuring cup into her own hands.

Plant Based Options for the Inner City

Statistics show, historically, Latin-American, African-American and lower socio-economic status communities don’t have the same access to plant-based options as their counterparts. This disparity can be seen first-hand within the Downtown community.

Things are changing

As Downtown Los Angeles continues its transition, Divine Dips joins this culinary transformation with a growing, almost religious following of vegan ice cream lovers.

“We’re not just an ice cream shop trying to sell ice cream. When you come into Divine Dips, not only are you getting vegan ice cream, we’re providing a space and an opportunity for the community to have a conversation about health, environmental consciousness and the ethical and humane treatment of animals.”

Divine Dips will soon be added to the offerings at Chunk-N-Chip, a popular Orange County ice cream destination, located in Santa Ana. Divine Dips welcomes local eateries to feature its vegan ice cream as a menu option and is ready to take on the demand.
